Character
H.C. Marsh Tool Co., Rockford, Illinois. Marsh produced bench planes in a limited run approximately 1915–1927 — outside the main Stanley/Record/Sargent axis. The M2 (flat sole) and M2-C (corrugated sole) models are notable for a more substantial casting than comparable Bailey-pattern planes.
A rare maker: the Marsh Tool Co. does not appear in standard collector references. Market appearances are infrequent, making the Marsh No. 2 an interesting peripheral acquisition for a collection focused on No. 2 size planes.
Construction
Bailey-pattern cast iron body with a casting profile that differs from the Stanley/Sargent standard. The M2-C variant has a corrugated sole. Variant attribution depends on the presence of corrugation on the owned example.
Dating
Production circa 1915–1927 per available H.C. Marsh Tool Co. catalogue records. Precise dating within this window requires comparison against production catalogues — Marsh documentation is scarce.
Notes
This page documents the Marsh No. 2 as held in the collection. Variant attribution (M2 or M2-C) depends on the sole condition and awaits physical verification.
